With Tomas Belo waiving the flowers and drinking champagne on the podium in Porto, thoughts in Die Tour Phantome HQ back in the Netherlands drifted back to a season ago. When the point went on a streak of more than half a season without scoring a single point. In a way, that's what helped Die Tour Phantome to one of it's biggest achievements in team history.
The relegation that followed near the end of last season, forced Tomas Belo to shift his focus. From aiming at the podium in the two climbing classics in Top Division, to the Tour is his homeland. With the great Falur Sigfinnursson Die Tour Phantome came close twice (4th and 5th), but never reached the podium there.
Until now. A good TT and an amazing victory in the last mountain stage (in the leader's jersey) gave Belo enough advantage to last in the final three stages. "I'm ecstatic", Belo said, after drinking his third bottle of champagne. "This is what I've dreaming of ever since I was a little boy", he managed to add before passing out.
Rumors that Die Tour Phantome-management has grown tired of the inconsistent Portuguese star and is trying to sell him, were denied vehemently by manager Alexx. "Tomas has always been an up and down kind of guy", he said, looking down at how team doctors tried to get Belo back to his senses. "Why would we deal him, just as he wins one of the most exciting and challenging races of OCM?" Well maybe because he is worth a lot of money now? Alexx: "That... erm... could very well be... erm... maybe... sorry, no more comment!!"
